How to make a Rainbow Cake

Growing up as a child, the first time I ever saw a rainbow in the sky I was ecstatic. I couldn't believe my eyes because I thought it was too good to be true and I marveled at its wonder. It made me to know that God is truly awesome and is a great Artist.  Rainbows are meteorological phenomenons caused  by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets causing a spectrum of light to appear in the sky. They take the form of a multi-coloured arc or semi-circle. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.
They can be full circles; but, the average observer sees only an arc formed by illuminated droplets above the ground and its centered on a line from the sun to the observers eye.
Today I have decided to post this recipe of mine to bring down the rainbow you see in the sky, far from you to being very close and sitting on your kitchen table or cake board. Enjoy!

Rainbow Cake Recipe

Prep Time: 30mins          Cook Time: 10mins for each layer     Total Time: 2hrs (plus cooling time)

Things you'll need:

    Cake:
  • Cake batter
  • 7 Bowls for mixing
  • 7  Spoons
  • 7 Food Colours (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green,Blue, Indigo (mix blue and violet) and Violet)
  • Baking pan (I used a 6-inch pan, make sure you have enough batter to suit your pan size)
  • Butter for greasing Pan
  • Palette Knife for spreading frosting
  • Big spoon or Ice-cream scoop
Frosting:
  • Butter cream frosting
  • Piping bags and No. 12 Piping tip
  • Food colours (same as above )
Procedure: Preheat the oven/pot (see my previous post on "how to bake a cake without oven") to 180 degrees Celsius.
Share the batter in all the bowls by scooping out same proportions into the bowls until batter is equally shared.

When this is completed, put the colours into each bowls accordingly, starting with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. ( I used the acronym ROYGBIV)
With a different spoon for each bowl, mix in the colours thoroughly. Using different spoons prevents colours mixing together. You can use same spoon if you want, but you will have to wash it from time to time which is quite stressful. That's why I went for the option of using different spoons.
Bake each coloured batter one at a time by pouring in the batter into the pan and using the spoon to work it out to fill the base of the pan. Make sure the batter fills the base completely because the batter is a thin layer, so care must be taken to make sure its evenly distributed.
Bake for 10mins each and allow to cool.
When completely cool, layer each cake with butter-cream frosting (watch-out for my post on my butter-cream frosting recipe) and stack up the cakes in layers.
Crumb coat with a thin layer of butter-cream icing.
Repeat the same procedure for the mixing of the colours for the frosting and put them in your piping bag with the tip and pipe in petal shaped patterns. And there you have it! Your very own rainbow cake!

5 Ways to Salvage your Ruined Cake

Cake mishaps are inevitable sometimes. And when this happens, usually the first reaction is to panic, especially when it is for an occasion you have been duly paid to service. Let me share one of my many cake mishaps with you. Photo Credit: merrybrides It happened a long time ago when I was still starting out as an amateur baker back in the University. I was given a birthday cake contract to be delivered in two days. I was really excited because that was one of the first major cakes I was actually being paid to do. I wanted to impress so much that I went over-budget to make sure the cake stands out ( it did standout alright! LOL but in an awkward position) LOL. Because of my over-zealousness to impress, I wasn't precise with my measurements and disaster fell. The cake turned out to be soaking wet with fat. Too much fat! I was devastated as I had just that evening to deliver the cake. ( by the way, I didn't start to bake until that day of delivery, another mistake, wan...

Nigerian Traditional Wedding Cakes

Image source: Nairaland.com I love my country Nigeria mostly because it is a country blessed with rich cultures and diverse ethnic groups with wonderful cuisines.  In the average Nigerian culture, When a man and woman are going to be joined together, one of the most important ceremonies, is the traditional wedding. This is very key as it is a symbol of the couple's parent being in total support of the union. There must be a traditional wedding before the church or court wedding, whichever way the couple chooses to be joined.  A typical traditional wedding tells guest, friends and everyone that needs to know, where the couple is from. In most traditional marriages, in the order of events, the bride's ethnicity is first represented with the bride dressed and dolled up in almost everything that represents where she is from and then after all the pomp and pageantry of the acceptance of the bride price, the bride then changes her attire into the grooms ethnic group i,e i...

HOW TO BAKE A CAKE WITHOUT AN OVEN

For people like me who happen to live in a country where power supply is epileptic, one has not to solely rely on electricity for one's daily activities.   This is especially essential for cake makers like me. So in a case where there is no electricity and one cannot afford to use a gas oven, we are made to find a way out - IMPROVISATION.  This baking without an oven technique came in handy many times as a cake maker while studying in the University and still does when I want to be very economical. You can still try it out if you have a cooker that has a non-functional oven or if you find yourself in a situation where  an oven is not readily available Here is how to bake a cake without an oven.  Things you'll need; 1. A kerosene stove or cooker 2. Aluminum Pot - it can vary in size depending on the size of cake. Cupcakes don't require large pots but larger cakes do. 3. Baking Pans ( Aluminum foil pans or cupcake tins or aluminu...
