How to make a Baskweave Pattern on a Cake

Who can fill a basket with roses? ME! LOL. Anyone can actually!. I made my tutorial on how to make buttercream frosting/icing in my previous post. Here, I am going to show you how I put it to use.
First I made some buttercream mini-roses or should I say nano-roses LOL. Then I put my buttercream to use by making a basket weave pattern on the cake. Here is a step by step process of how I did it.

 Things you'll need;

  • Cake (any shape you want. I used a round cake)
  • Palette knife (for crumb-coating)
  • Turntable
  • Piping bag with Serated-like looking tip.
  • Buttercream icing
  • Food colour (you can choose your options, I used Brown)
  • Buttercream roses(Optional)
  • Flower wires( for the handle)

Step 1: Crumb coat your cake with buttercream and pop into the freezer for 30mins. Apply a final coat of buttercream and set aside.
Step 2: Prepare your buttercream by adding the colour you want to use and putting it in a piping bag. Pipe a vertical line from bottom to top of the cake.

Step 3: Pipe horizontal lines across the vertical, giving about 2cm wide spaces between them.

Step 4: Pipe another vertical line from bottom to top along the horizontal edges making sure you leave room for the next set of horizontal lines. Pipe in the horizontal lines, filling the spaces between the previous line to form an interlocking pattern.

Step 5: Repeat step 4 above for the third set of interlocking pattern.
Step 6: Continue in this pattern until the whole cake is covered.
Step 7: Pipe the edge of the cake for a basket-like looking edge. Take your flower wires and insert them to form a handle. Roll out a piece of coloured fondant (see my next post on how to make your own fondant) and wrap it around the flower wires. Arrange your mini-roses on the top of the cake and voila! Your basket cake is ready!
