The joining of a man and woman as one is a very sacred one. In Nigeria, this day is not taken lightly especially by the Bride. With the advent of all forms of Social Media platforms, having your wedding with lots of fanfare and a very glamorous cake is now the core of the ceremony in order for their wedding to be featured on popular social media pages and be the rave of the moment. Couples now shoot short films telling their love stories, of which some of them could be good contenders in Film Festivals.  Well, whether you want your wedding to be elaborate or serene. Or your are the bride who wants your wedding to be the talk of town, ignoring the real meaning of a wedding. Here are a few tips on how to choose your perfect Wedding cake.

1. Plan ahead

In order to have your perfect wedding and cake, you need to plan ahead of time. Place your order with the Baker 6months ahead of the wedding ceremony.Make sure you check constantly to make sure you are up-to-date with how your cake is going.  Show your cake baker/decorator pictures of what you have in mind and let the baker draw up sketches of what you want your cake to look like.

2. Look for Ideas

When planning your wedding, do well to look for wedding cake ideas and what inspires you, in order to incorporate it into the event. Let your cake speak for you. and also tell people about you.

3. Choose your Baker wisely

If you do not want your wedding cake featured on Cakewrecks, then I advise you take this tip seriously. When choosing your baker make sure you trust their work and they are reputable. Also ensure that they know what they are doing and can translate your cake sketch into a reality.  Go for a professional or someone who you know or have seen their work.

 4. Know your Budget

Be honest about your budget. Many brides crave a very glamorous wedding and when their budget doesn't cover it, they try to cut corners by hiring a less experienced baker that they pay less to achieve this. This doesn't work most of the time as it turns out to be a disaster. Stick to your budget. If you have a small budget, then choose a more simple cake design and limit your number of tiers. This will cut cost. Remember you get what you pay for. Don't be cheap and expect glam. Cut your coat according to your cloth.

5.  Portion dictates Size

The number of people you want to invite to your wedding will determine the size of your cake. The portions will determine the size of the cake. If you don't intend to share your wedding cake, you can also contract your baker to make small pieces for each guest. Make sure you have a clear understanding with your baker and a well put  together contract.

6.  Like your style

When you have chosen your wedding cake, make sure it is what suits you and what you like. You can decide to incorporate location, season (e.g Festive period ) fashion, nature or tell your story in your wedding cake as long as it is all you and you like it.

7. Involve your Partner

This is a very important part of choosing your wedding cake. Make sure you involve your partner in the cake design, testing and all there is. Do not be a selfish bride by excluding one of the most important person in your decisions. This is very vital. It will help strengthen the bond on your big day.

Nigerian Traditional Wedding Cakes

Image source: Nairaland.com I love my country Nigeria mostly because it is a country blessed with rich cultures and diverse ethnic groups with wonderful cuisines.  In the average Nigerian culture, When a man and woman are going to be joined together, one of the most important ceremonies, is the traditional wedding. This is very key as it is a symbol of the couple's parent being in total support of the union. There must be a traditional wedding before the church or court wedding, whichever way the couple chooses to be joined.  A typical traditional wedding tells guest, friends and everyone that needs to know, where the couple is from. In most traditional marriages, in the order of events, the bride's ethnicity is first represented with the bride dressed and dolled up in almost everything that represents where she is from and then after all the pomp and pageantry of the acceptance of the bride price, the bride then changes her attire into the grooms ethnic group i,e if

5 Ways to Salvage your Ruined Cake

Cake mishaps are inevitable sometimes. And when this happens, usually the first reaction is to panic, especially when it is for an occasion you have been duly paid to service. Let me share one of my many cake mishaps with you. Photo Credit: merrybrides It happened a long time ago when I was still starting out as an amateur baker back in the University. I was given a birthday cake contract to be delivered in two days. I was really excited because that was one of the first major cakes I was actually being paid to do. I wanted to impress so much that I went over-budget to make sure the cake stands out ( it did standout alright! LOL but in an awkward position) LOL. Because of my over-zealousness to impress, I wasn't precise with my measurements and disaster fell. The cake turned out to be soaking wet with fat. Too much fat! I was devastated as I had just that evening to deliver the cake. ( by the way, I didn't start to bake until that day of delivery, another mistake, wan

HOW TO BAKE A CAKE WITHOUT AN OVEN

For people like me who happen to live in a country where power supply is epileptic, one has not to solely rely on electricity for one's daily activities.   This is especially essential for cake makers like me. So in a case where there is no electricity and one cannot afford to use a gas oven, we are made to find a way out - IMPROVISATION.  This baking without an oven technique came in handy many times as a cake maker while studying in the University and still does when I want to be very economical. You can still try it out if you have a cooker that has a non-functional oven or if you find yourself in a situation where  an oven is not readily available Here is how to bake a cake without an oven.  Things you'll need; 1. A kerosene stove or cooker 2. Aluminum Pot - it can vary in size depending on the size of cake. Cupcakes don't require large pots but larger cakes do. 3. Baking Pans ( Aluminum foil pans or cupcake tins or aluminum baking pan
