10 Cakes you must try before you Die

This list will give you an insight into some of the most-loved cakes in the WAorld and I enjoin you to make sure you include them in your Bucket list (Lol) because they are that good!. Here they are;

1. Angel Food Cake

The Angel food cake is a very light in texture sponge cake and it is made by beating egg whites until stiff and then cream of tartar with other ingredients added to it. It is then baked in a tube pan.
This cake has a melt-in-your-mouth feel and it is one cake that tops my list.

2.Black Forest Cake

This cake is of a German origin. It is mainly a chocolate cake with several layers laced with whipped cream and cherries. It is then decorated with more cherries, whipped cream and chocolate crumbs or shavings. The cherries are soaked in a popular brandy called Kirsch which is made from tart cherries. In Germany, this is a mandatory ingredient in the recipe as it gives the cake its signature flavor. This is a cake to die for. *winks

3. Cheesecake

Honestly people, this is one of my favorite cakes (I am having a slice right now). If I wasn't writing this list in alphabetical order, it will be my No.1 cake to die for. You must try this before you leave this earth my friend! (pun intended) Lol.

This cake is a sweet cake that has a very smooth satiny feel in your mouth that just gives you the high. It is a layered cake made of a bottom layer of crushed biscuit/crackers/cookies or crumbled sponge cake whichever you prefer and a top layer of a mixture of cream cheese, eggs, sugar, sour cream, whipped cream etc based on the recipe your are using. It is then baked in a spring form pan and a topping of your choice is used e.g strawberries or raspberries. I must tell you, if you haven't had this cake, YOU ARE MISSING (shouting at the top of my voice). Watch-out for my post on how to make this cake soon.

4. Chocolate Fondant Cake

I watched an episode of Celebrity Masterchef recently on BBC Lifestyle, and a contestant made a chocolate fondant cake. It was so appealing that I wished that one could just conjure things out of the TV especially when watching Food channels. That aside,  the chocolate fondant cake is also called the Molten chocolate cake or Lava cake due to its hard outer layer and a caramel-like liquid chocolate inside. It consists of four major ingredients, Chocolate, eggs, sugar and butter. It is a flour-less cake baked in a Ramekin (this is a small ceramic bowl  that can be used in the oven). This cake sure would leave you wanting more and it sure is on my own must-have cake bucket list.

5. Chiffon cake

Chiffon cakes are very light and fluffy cakes and they are made with vegetable oil, eggs, flour, sugar and baking powder. The oil used makes them low in fat compared to their butter counterparts and also this makes them lighter.. Lemon chiffon cakes are the most popular of the various types of chiffon cakes. For cake lovers out there who are too scared to indulge because of the high fat content in cakes, this is one cake you have to try.

6. Fruit Cake

Fruit cake is a cake with a conglomeration(I know big words too. Lol) of different fruits. Fruits such as chopped candied fruits and/or dried fruits, nuts, raisins and spices. They are usually soaked in brandy, rum or gin in order to activate their juices and soften them before going into the cake. This is best done overnight as you get better results.  It is mainly a celebration cake like during festive seasons such as Christmas. Its a type of cake that can be eaten without any icing. This cake is a big contender, as if properly done would win your heart.

7. Ice-cream cake

An ice-cream cake is a layered cake with ice-cream filling incorporated in each layer, and also frosted with it too. This cake is then frozen to let the ice-cream set. This cake is a very sweet cake and the flavor if the ice-cream used may vary thereby allowing for a more variant cake. It is also one of my favorite as it allows you to have a melt-in-your mouth feel when its being consumed leaving you wanting more. You can't get enough of it until its down to the last crumb. Make sure you try it.

8. Oreo-Cookie Cake

Yeah! I know you must be thinking by now that I am such a sweet tooth, think again! Lol. I do my cakes moderately (chuckles). But really, I love Oreo cookies, I think something in them just makes you indulge, they have that nice chocolatey sweetness that isn't too sweet and are dark and I love dark!*winks (please don't get me wrong here). It even gets better when its incorporated in cakes and it makes you ooooh! and aaahhh!. Try one of these and you will know what I am talking about.

9. Red Velvet Cake

Ahhh! at last we are there, I know a lot of people have been  expecting to see if this cake would make my list. Of course yeah! what do you think. If it didn't, I am sure I would be sued. Lol! Ok, so this is one of the most famous cakes in every corner of the world. It is almost like the elite of the cake kingdom. If you haven't had a slice then ..... (I reserve my comment). This cake gets its name from its colour which ranges from bright red, dark red and reddish brown and it is traditionally served with Roux icing or cream cheese frosting. Juice extracted from Beetroots or red food colour is usually used to achieve this redness. Some even achieve their from the reaction of the acidic vinegar and the buttermilk used. This is one cake you must try, it is really moist and very enjoyable. Check out my red velvet cake recipe here

A Swiss roll cake is a thin sheet, spongy cake baked in a flat rectangular baking pan. It is then filled up with mostly chopped strawberries, jam or whipped cream and than rolled in a swirl pattern. This is a very classy and must cake as it is just sits beautifully in your plate and dares you to eat it. Try it out

This list is my own compilation based on my research and what my taste buds tells me and also based on testimonies from around the web.
Do try them out! You will be glad you did. Adios amigos!

Nigerian Traditional Wedding Cakes

Image source: Nairaland.com I love my country Nigeria mostly because it is a country blessed with rich cultures and diverse ethnic groups with wonderful cuisines.  In the average Nigerian culture, When a man and woman are going to be joined together, one of the most important ceremonies, is the traditional wedding. This is very key as it is a symbol of the couple's parent being in total support of the union. There must be a traditional wedding before the church or court wedding, whichever way the couple chooses to be joined.  A typical traditional wedding tells guest, friends and everyone that needs to know, where the couple is from. In most traditional marriages, in the order of events, the bride's ethnicity is first represented with the bride dressed and dolled up in almost everything that represents where she is from and then after all the pomp and pageantry of the acceptance of the bride price, the bride then changes her attire into the grooms ethnic group i,e if

5 Ways to Salvage your Ruined Cake

Cake mishaps are inevitable sometimes. And when this happens, usually the first reaction is to panic, especially when it is for an occasion you have been duly paid to service. Let me share one of my many cake mishaps with you. Photo Credit: merrybrides It happened a long time ago when I was still starting out as an amateur baker back in the University. I was given a birthday cake contract to be delivered in two days. I was really excited because that was one of the first major cakes I was actually being paid to do. I wanted to impress so much that I went over-budget to make sure the cake stands out ( it did standout alright! LOL but in an awkward position) LOL. Because of my over-zealousness to impress, I wasn't precise with my measurements and disaster fell. The cake turned out to be soaking wet with fat. Too much fat! I was devastated as I had just that evening to deliver the cake. ( by the way, I didn't start to bake until that day of delivery, another mistake, wan

HOW TO BAKE A CAKE WITHOUT AN OVEN

For people like me who happen to live in a country where power supply is epileptic, one has not to solely rely on electricity for one's daily activities.   This is especially essential for cake makers like me. So in a case where there is no electricity and one cannot afford to use a gas oven, we are made to find a way out - IMPROVISATION.  This baking without an oven technique came in handy many times as a cake maker while studying in the University and still does when I want to be very economical. You can still try it out if you have a cooker that has a non-functional oven or if you find yourself in a situation where  an oven is not readily available Here is how to bake a cake without an oven.  Things you'll need; 1. A kerosene stove or cooker 2. Aluminum Pot - it can vary in size depending on the size of cake. Cupcakes don't require large pots but larger cakes do. 3. Baking Pans ( Aluminum foil pans or cupcake tins or aluminum baking pan
