Ombre Cake (Two-toned)
This is a very easy-to-do DIY cake decoration. The Ombre design is something that has been in vogue for the past years. It is now very much incorporated in Fashion mainly Hair and nails. The Ombre design can be used to decorate your wedding cakes and other ceremonious cakes. It can be done in ruffles style, petal style, star style, frill style amongst others. You can also play with your colours. Here is a step by step tutorial on how to do the Ombre petal style two-toned design enjoy.
Things you'll need:
- Crumb-coated round cake (check out my next post on how to crumb-coat your cake easily)
- Turntable/Revolving cake stand
- Two Piping bags filled with buttercream coloured to your choice (mine was Violet)
- No. 12 round piping tip
- Scraper
- Small offset palette knife or use the back of a metal tablespoon.
Procedure: To make your Ombre cake, fix your round tip into the piping bag. Place your cake on a cake board on the revolving stand. Making sure your facing directly in front of the cake, pipe dots on the cake starting from the bottom with the darker shade to the top with the lighter shade of buttercream.
You will notice that the dots are peaked and it is at this peaks, that the offset palette knife is used to press down on it and smoothened on the cake. Scrape the tip of the knife on the scraper. Continue to do this untill all the cake is covered making sure you scrape the knife at each interval.
For the top, pipe dots just like you did on the sides and smoothen it on the cake from the peaked point.
Continue in this pattern starting with the lighter shade of buttercream and working it in with the darker shade. When you get to the middle and seal with a dot.
At the end, when there isn't any space to smoothen on the cake, just pipe dots to seal the space. And your Ombre petal cake is ready.
TIPS and ADVICE:
- Make sure that at every interval, you scrape your knife or back of spoon clean to avoid the colours mixing into each other
- When piping the dots at each interval, make sure the next dot is at about 0.5cm from each other.
